Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer

Community and Support

Peer Support

Connecting with others who understand what you are going through can be comforting. Support groups bring together people with similar experiences (like living with metastatic breast cancer) so you can speak freely, share tips, and support one another.

Being part of a group can help you feel less alone and improve your emotional well-being. Many people say it gives them a sense of hope, connection, and a safe space to express their feelings.

Support groups come in two different styles, and both can be helpful:

  • Professionally led groups are run by counsellors or social workers. They offer structure and guidance, but the leader may not have personal experience with breast cancer.
  • Peer-led groups are run by others living with breast cancer. They bring a shared experience, though the leader may not be trained to handle every situation.

If you are thinking about joining a group, it is okay to ask the leader about their experience or training.

To find a support group near you, visit the Canadian Cancer Society’s Community Services Locator or check with your local cancer centre. Some groups meet in person, while others meet online.

If there is no metastatic breast cancer (mBC) group nearby, or you would prefer connecting online, visit our online support section for resources made just for people living with mBC.
